Could you imagine opening up a 21st gift from a couple of friends to find a voucher for a ‘Donkey Shebeen Crawl in Lesotho.’ Thought not. Well, Dorian & Matt somehow managed to find the perfect gift for one of my best friends, Kath, which meant that we all joined her road trip to take part in this unusual adventure. We entered the country through the Quacha’s Nek border post, and were pleasantly surprised by the condition of the roads once we entered Lesotho. We booked in to the most adorable little stone rondawel-style dormitory, and were as happy as could be. The next morning we hiked to the Maletsunyane Falls – which also happens to be the highest commercial waterfall abseil in the world! That afternoon we all selected our noble steeds, which we proceeded to ride from shebeen to shebeen. Balancing on a donkey, became notably more challenging the more beers we had. Balancing, however, was particularly difficult for the loosing snooker team who had to ride their donkeys backwards to the next bar. Mention must also be made to the two coins which were consumed during a game of coinage. Kath, regurgitated her beer back into the glass to avoid swallowing her coin, whilst Blake, on the other hand, said he could not possibly waste good beer, and instead would be ‘awaiting his profitable shit.’ Delightful Blake. This weekend will always been remembered for the giggly donkey rides, dirty feet, dusty hair, and happy hearts. If this seems to be your cup of tea I’d highly recommend contacting Semongkong Lodge here.
